The Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (College of Sciences and Technology, New University of Lisbon) is a public higher education college that has undergraduate and post-graduate courses in all the major fields of physical and biological sciences and in science and mathematics teacher training. It has about 6000 undergradute students + 1500 post-graduate and is located nearly Lisbon.
FCTUNL has a large experience on helping secondary schools introduce new information technologies, particularly in science and mathematics. It has run national projects and collaborated in European projects with that aim since 1986.
Recently participated in IST projects on development and use of ICT tools.
Dr Vitor Duarte Teodoro, a former secondary school teacher with a large experience of writing physics textbooks for schools, joined the college in 1986 and since then has been involved with teacher education in science and mathematics.
Dr Teodoro research focus on using modelling and data logging for improving physics learning. He has authored more than twenty software titles, including Modellus, a modelling package for physics and mathematics available in different languages and part of different physics curricula, such as Advancing Physics (UK, Institute of Physics).
The following tasks will be assigned to The Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia:

  • Development, pilot testing and validation.
  • Review of existing tools and curriculum materials
  • Adaptation and translation of software into Portuguese.
  • Pilot development of 3 modules.
  • Translation and adaptation of pilot modules into Portuguese
  • Development of next 4 modules
  • Translation and adaptation of 2nd set of modules into Portuguese
  • Development of next 5 modules.
  • Translation and adaptation of 3rd set of modules into Portuguese.
  • Define evaluation criteria and devise pro forma for teacher reports.
  • Trial modules in 3 schools.
  • Training of science teachers in 3 schools using the final courseware.
  • Seminars for teacher trainers.
  • Dissemination activities (papers, conference presentations).
  • Final reports.
  • Web-site of the project.
  • Group meetings.
  • Internal reports on group activities and financial follow-up.
